Sailing across the ocean to volunteer in the World’s Great War, Libby has just uttered the biggest lie of her life.
While worrying over her deception and hoping for forgiveness, she can’t help but think about the people affected. The people who she has come to call family. Through events seemingly as random as the landing of rain upon concrete, their paths converged. Events, both heartbreaking and uplifting.
Every story has a beginning . . .
As well as an end. But, for Libby and her boys, just how long will their story be? And, if given a chance for more time with her boys and other loved ones, would she take it even if that chance meant reliving the bad moments along with the good? If it meant reliving the moment when she made her extraordinary promise? Only in traveling back to the start of their story can she hope to discover an answer.
Standing upon the grass of a Long Island field and watching his brothers prepare for the World’s Great War, Axel wondered how he was going to protect them.
And, himself. Protect them against a foe hurling more than words and fists. The prior summer, they had spoken of war with excitement and wonder. But, had Libby been right all along?
Was it foolish to believe each of them was going to come through the war unscathed? Axel knew the answer. Since the days of their youth, he had been their protector. The one who tried to keep them out of trouble. Back then, their enemies hadn't been wielding rifles nor swords, yet had seemed no less powerful. Together, they had fought them and won.
Thinking back upon those days, the days of their youth, Axel wondered if they would be so lucky again.
Whenever Vivian was asked why she took three bedraggled orphans into her home, she always responded, “Sometimes, you don’t know what is missing from your life until it appears upon your doorstep.” And that was exactly how Libby, Sebastian, and Axel had come into her life. A few short years later, two more boys found their way into her heart as well. Vivian could think of no greater gift than having had the opportunity to watch them grow into the young, successful adults they had become. They had been and always would be her unexpected treasures. Through them, through their happiness as well as their sorrow, she had been reminded of what it meant to be alive.
But now, two of her children were on their way to a war that had already claimed the lives of millions, while the other three were learning how to be soldiers so they could make their way to the blood-soaked countryside, too. How Vivian was going to endure the seconds, minutes, and hours of every day, not knowing if her children were alive or dead, she didn’t know.
All Vivian could do was wait. Wait and hope the miracle responsible for guiding Libby, Sebastian, and Axel to the farm that Spring morning ten years ago would help bring them as well as her other two boys back home again.
Ten years ago. They had been children then . . .
Finding Hope in Wings is the third book in the Extraordinary Promise Series. Within this book, Vivian, the woman who took Libby, Sebastian, and Axel into her home as children, now has to wait patiently for them to return from a war already responsible for claiming millions of lives. Them as well as the two other sons she had welcomed a few short years later.
At the beginning of the book and again in the end, we are with Vivian as she attempts to cope with her fears. During the remainder of the story, we follow the children as they mature into young adulthood. With this book and the preceding ones, the majority of the story is meant to be memories tucked between the pages of an internal struggle being felt by one of the lead characters.
Follow the characters as they travel to Cunningham Farm and the beloved pond. Rothwell Ranch and the baseball field. Dr. Brown's Clinic and Mr. McGregor's General Store. The dress shop and the schoolhouse.
